The BC General Aviation Association held its first general meeting on August 25th 2016 at the Abbotsford Flying Club. The meeting was well attended with over 35 attending in person and through the online live stream there were over 200 that attended for all or part of the meeting. The minutes will be released in the coming days but here is a brief summary of the key points of the meeting.
The Abbotsford Flying Club were gracious hosts and made everyone feel right at home. While we would call this meeting a success, there are certainly lessons that were learned and we have already begun a list of things that we would like to do better on next year.
Some of the areas where we as a group feel that we could improve are:
– Keeping the casual feel while introducing slightly more structure to the meeting.
– Figuring out a way for the online attendees to feel more involved
– Coming up with a solution to build some structure around voting that works for in-person and online attendees.
– Accomplishing all the BCGA business in the first part of the meeting before any non-BCGA items.
– Scheduling the meeting at a better time both in terms of time of day and time of year.
New Directors
We are pleased to announce that the members voted to keep the existing board of directors with the addition of 2 board members. In order to better represent the pilots of our Province new positions have been created in the Okanagan and Vancouver Island.
Okanagan – Roger Nickel (Kamloops, BC)
Vancouver Island – Robert Anderson (Victoria, BC)
Both of these gentlemen are motivated to represent the BCGA in their regions and are available to you to discuss anything that you may feel is important when it comes to BCGA involvement in your region.
Local Liaison Position
The membership voted to allow the board to appoint local liaisons in some remote and under represented communities in the province. These individuals will be act as non-voting board members in their communities to further the cause of the BCGA and provide representation in areas that are difficult to serve with our current structure (ie. Fort St. John).
Bi Annual Meetings
The general consensus is that the BCGA should hold meetings twice a year. It was brought up that one meeting should be in the Lower Mainland and the other should be elsewhere in the province and its location should change from year to year.
